* * *

Before I even get a chance to speak, Ryan is already back in her car. When I chase after her and yank on the driver’s-side door, it’s locked. She clutches her hands around the steering wheel, her expression hard.

“Just hear me out,” I say through the glass. “I know it was wrong to trick you, but I knew you wouldn’t come here if I didn’t lie.”

Ryan won’t even look at me. Her eyes are fixed on some unspecified point over the dashboard as she locks her arms over her chest. “Yeah, and maybe that should’ve been a red flag,” she says. “You literally lured me out here.” She shakes her head. “I knew it was weird that you wanted to meet in Coronado instead of Lennon. I just drove an hour for absolutely nothing.”

Technically it should have taken her longer than an hour to get here, but the way Ryan drives, I probably shouldn’t be surprised. Last night on the phone I made it sound like I wanted to talk to her about the argument at Grant’s house, but I couldn’t do it in Lennon. Too many bad memories. It was a long shot that she’d even agree, but when she grunted her reluctant response, I knew I had them both.

“You made me feel like a dick just so I’d come out here,” she says.

“No, you feel like a dick because you acted like a dick,” I say. I practiced this part on the drive here, imagining this exact scenario. I was going to be strong. Determined. Honest. “I’m sorry for lying, but if you feel guilty, that’s not my fault. All I said was I wanted to talk to you about the party; I didn’t say anything about what. If you brought your own feelings to the table, that’s on you.”

Annie approaches us but stays far enough back so that if Ryan has a secret stash of shrimp in her car, she won’t be able to reach her. “I thought we were supposed to be riding bikes around Coronado,” Annie says quietly from behind me.

I turn so that I’m speaking to them both equally. “We are,” I say. “That’s why we’re here.” Annie’s face shares the same skepticism as Ryan’s, except hers isn’t as twinged with anger. “Look, we used to love coming here. And I’ve never pulled a card like this before and I won’t do it again, but you both owe me after Grant’s house. You were like two hyenas fighting over a dead deer, except I was the dead deer and you weren’t fighting over who was gonna eat me; you were fighting about who killed me in the first place.”

“Hyenas don’t eat deer,” Ryan says. “How would that even make sense?”

“Yeah, where do you think hyenas live?” Annie says.

“Okay, fine,” I say. “Then it’s like—it’s like when…” I can’t think of anything smart to say with them both staring at me. “Okay, so it’s like…”

Ryan rolls her eyes up to the ceiling of her car.
